Useful terms
Announcement: a message that is broadcast to all course participants and is available from the My Courses page under My Announcements.
Assessment: an online assessment that records and scores your responses to gauge your understanding of course content.
Audio-visual material: audio and video files that are made available as resources within a course.
Calendar: displays all your scheduled events recorded by course facilitators. You can add private events to your calendar.
Folder: a location where resources are stored.
Poll: a resource that enables you to vote on an issue and is used to record and tally the views of participants. It is similar to a survey, however, a poll contains only one question with one or more possible responses (multiple choice).
Resource: any item that is available for you to use in a course, for example a document such as a PDF file or a SCORM course.
SCORM course: a package of web-based learning materials stored in the SCORM multi-content file format. It may contain both a video and a presentation.
Survey: a resource that enables you to respond with your opinion on one or more issues. It is similar to a poll, however a survey may contain more than one question and enables a variety of response types (multiple choice, multiple response and so on).
Web course: a package of web-based learning materials accessed via a resource link in a course that can contain video and other rich media.
My Online Learning content
My Online Learning opens once you have logged on from the CPA Australia website. It is organised into three main areas:
(1)My courses: your main area of activity. This page enables you to see course announcements, browse and use course materials and schedule activities.
(2)Search: this page enables you to search all resources available to you.
(3)Bookmarks: a useful way to access frequently used or important material. This page enables you to view bookmarked materials and add or delete bookmarks.
My Courses is the default page and the one in which you will spend most time. It is organised into four areas:
(1)Course list: lists available courses.
(2)My announcements: lists announcements that have been posted by your course facilitators.
(3)My calendar: displays your calendar for the month, including any activities for today.
How to browse for a resource
If you want to browse for a resource, use the following procedure:
1.On the My courses page, under Course list select the relevant course. Available material is listed.
2.Open folders as necessary by clicking the Expand button (+) to display folder contents.
3.Close folders as necessary by clicking the Contract button (-) to hide folder contents.
4.Click View beneath an item to display its details
You can list materials of a particular type (for example, surveys), by scrolling down to Tools for this course and clicking the relevant option (e.g. View surveys). Matching materials are shown in a separate list. Click an item's link to display its details.
How to use the green and orange arrows
The Green arrows indicate that the learning resource has been viewed and completed.
The Orange arrows indicate that the learning resource has been viewed, but not yet completed.
Please note:
1.No arrow is displayed if the user has not viewed the learning resource.
2.Learning resources that require user interaction (e.g. polls, assessment, SCORM) are marked as completed only after the user has interacted with it (e.g. voted on a poll).
3.Learning resources that do not require user interaction (e.g. PDFs, Word, announcements) are automatically marked as completed when viewed.
4.There are no restrictions on the number of times a learning resource can be completed.
How to search for a resource
Basic search
If you want to use the basic search, use the following procedure:
1.Select the Search button at the top of the page.
2.Type a Keyword (e.g. tax structures).
3.Click Search. Matching resources are listed. You can refine your search by modifying the keyword or performing an advanced search.
4.If there are many items, navigate the list by clicking the Next, Previous, Last and First buttons.
5.Sort the list if necessary by selecting a Sort this list by option (e.g. select Most recent), then click Submit.
6.Click the resource's link to access content.
Advanced search
If you want to use the advanced search, use the following procedure:
1.Select the Search button at the top of the page.
2.Click Advanced search.
3.Type a keyword (optional). For example, type tax structures.
4.Select a Course name to limit the search to a particular course, or accept the default of All courses.
5.Select a resource type (e.g. PDF) to limit the search to a particular type of resource, or accept the default of Any Type.
6.Click Search. Matching resources are listed. You can refine your search by modifying your search criteria.
7.If there are many items, navigate the list by clicking the Next, Previous, Last and First buttons.
8.Sort the list if necessary by selecting a Sort this list by option (e.g. select Most recent), then click Submit.
9.Click the resource's link to access content.
How to bookmark a resource
Bookmarks give you quick access to important or frequently used resources.
If you want to bookmark a resource, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the resource in the resource list and click View to display a link to the item.
(2)Search for the resource and click its title to display a link to the item.
2.Click Add bookmark (displayed above the resource details).
How to open a bookmarked resource
If you have bookmarked a resource you can access the material quickly via its bookmark.
If you want to open a bookmarked resource, use the following procedure:
1.Select the Bookmarks button at the top of the page. Bookmarks are listed.
2.Click View beneath the resource.
How to remove a bookmark
When you no longer need a bookmark you can remove it. This does not remove the resource, only the bookmark to it.
If you want to remove a bookmark, use the following procedure:
1.Select the Bookmarks button at the top of the page. Bookmarks are listed.
2.Select the relevant bookmark by clicking the check box beside it.
3.Click Delete selected.
4.Click OK in response to the confirmation message.
How to view an announcement
Announcements that have been posted by your course facilitators are listed under My announcements on the My courses tab.
To view details of an announcement:
(1)Click the announcement's link.
To search announcements:
(1)Under My announcements, click View more. This displays a list of announcements in the advanced search facility, enabling you to find a particular announcement by scrolling through the list or specifying search criteria.
How to open a file
If you want to open a file, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the file in the resource list and click view to display a link to the file.
(2)Search for the file and click its title to display a link to the file.
2.Click the file's link to display its contents. Depending on how your system is set up, a dialog box may be displayed and you may need to download the file before opening it.
How to participate in a poll
If you want to participate in a poll, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the poll in the resource list and click view to display a link to the poll.
(2)Search for the poll and click its title to display a link to the poll. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of Poll to limit search results exclusively to polls.
2.Read the question.
3.Select the response that best matches your opinion.
4.Click Vote to submit your response. If the facilitator has chosen to make results public, current poll results are displayed.
How to launch a SCORM course
If you want to launch a SCORM course, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the SCORM course in the resource list (green book) and click view to display its launch point.
(2)Search for the SCORM course and click its title to display a launch point to the course. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of SCORM Course to limit search results exclusively to SCORM courses.
2.Click Launch to start the course. Depending on how the course is set up, it may have an index or a SCORM Navigation index to the left. The course may have several pages. It may also be organised into different tabs.
3.Use the Previous and Next links or click the links in the SCORM Navigation index to navigate.
4.Follow the instructions contained in the course.
5.On completion, click the Close button (X).
How to complete an assessment
If you want to complete an assessment, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the assessment in the resource list and click view to display its launch point.
(2)Search for the assessment and click its title to display a launch point to the assessment. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of assessment to limit search results exclusively to assessments.
2.Click Launch assessment to start the assessment.
3.Follow the instructions contained in the assessment, selecting and typing responses as required.
How to open audio material
If you want to open video material, use the following procedure:
Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the audio material in the resource list and click view to play it.
(2)Search for the audio material and click its title to play it. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of audio to limit search results exclusively to audio files.
How to open video material
If you want to open video material, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the video material in the resource list and click view to play it.
(2)Search for the video material and click its title to play it. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of video to limit search results exclusively to video files.
2.If a transcript is available, click Download transcript to download the text of the video.
3.Click Save when prompted and select a location for the transcript file.
4.Click Save to save the file, then click Open to open the transcript.
How to participate in a survey
Follow these steps:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the survey in the resource list and click view to display its launch point.
(2)Search for the survey and click its title to display a launch point to the survey. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of survey to limit search results exclusively to surveys.
2.Click Take survey to start the survey.
3.Follow the instructions contained in the survey, selecting and typing responses as required.
How to launch a web course
If you wan to launch a web course, use the following procedure:
1.Do one of the following:
(1)Browse for the web course in the resource list and click view to display a link to the course.
(2)Search for the web course and click its title to display a link to the course. If you perform an advanced search, select a Resource type of Web course to limit search results exclusively to web courses.
2.Click the link to the course to open the web course in a separate window.
3.Follow the instructions contained in the course and browse the links as required.
4.Close the window when you have completed the course.
How to open My Calendar
My calendar is available on the My courses page. In this view, it displays your calendar for the month, including any global activities for today (but not personal activities). Any other dates that have activities are hyperlinked.
Global activities are those that appear to everyone. These are also available as resources that can be browsed or searched but not changed, except by the facilitator.
Personal events are those that you can add, change and delete to help you plan your course activities. These are visible only to you, once you open your calendar.
To open My calendar to show today's activities in detail:
Click View more. The View day tab of My calendar is displayed, showing the day's hourly schedule.
To open My calendar to show activities for another day, follow these steps:
1.Click the Previous Month (left arrow) or Next Month (right arrow) buttons if you need to browse to another month.
2.Click an underlined (hyperlinked) date. The View day tab of My calendar is displayed, showing the day's hourly schedule.
From here you can:
(1)Click the View month tab to show all activities for the month. All dates are hyperlinked, making it easy to access a date to add a personal event. Just click a date to display the View day tab for that date.
(2)Click the View list tab to show activities as a list. The list can be filtered in a variety of ways by selecting View field options.
How to schedule an activity in My Calendar
Adding an activity
If you want to add an activity, use the following procedure:
1.Open My calendar.
2.Click Add activity.
3.Specify the title of the activity.
4.Provide a description of the activity.
5.Select whether or not this is to be an All day activity. Clicking the button toggles this field between Yes and No. If it is not an all day activity, you will need to also specify the start and end time.
6.Specify:
(1)the date of the activity (if it is an all day activity) or
(2)the start time and end time (if it is not an all day activity).
7.In the Activity occurs field, indicate the occurrence as once, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
8.Click Save and close. The activity is saved in My calendar. You can edit or delete the activity as necessary.
Editing an activity
If you want to edit an activity, use the following procedure:
1.Open My calendar and display the activity in either the View day or View list tab.
2.Click Edit beside the activity you want to edit. (You can only edit your personal activities).
3.Update the title and description as necessary.
4.Select whether or not this is to be an All day activity. Clicking the button toggles this field between Yes and No. If it is not an all day activity, you will need to also specify the start and end time.

3.Click Delete.
4.Click OK to confirm. The activity is deleted from My calendar.
