2.定属性、调语序:
①we were to understand放在两个逗号之间,作插入语,不影响主干,可以在找主句时先去除,剩下的是what motivated him was his zeal….Was是谓语动词,was前是主语,可以看到主语为what引导的主语从句。

②zeal for“fundamental fairness”,名词+for引导的介词短语,介词短语跟前面的名词zeal有关系,翻译成“对。。。的热情”
